Silex is quiet and comfy-feeling. You’ll know the local barber, the school librarian, and your auto mechanic by their first names, and they will know you.
Silex had its start in the 1880s when the railroad known as the Northern Hannibal Railway was extended to the town for the purposes of transportation. A post office called Silex has been in operation since 1882. The community was named after the main cash crop production of silicon sand.
Silex is a scenic drive down interstate 61, rounding to 70 miles northwest of St. Louis.
Silex is defined less by boundaries on a map than by the sense of shared values their residents hold dear. They take pride in maintaining a wholesome lifestyle, rich in cultural history, along with a deep commitment to the preservation of their environment and a progressive approach to local business.
The City of Silex offers a wide range of events, from outdoor concerts, seasonal festivals, and sports competitions, to spending time in our local parks, and relaxing with your family for an afternoon of outdoor fun.
Silex is served by the Silex R- I school district, which prides itself on being on of the best small school districts in Missouri.
